Coffin Hop is here!

The lightening machine is going. The fog machine is in full gear. The porch is alive with trick or treaters!! I’m so glad you stopped by for a treat…my pulse is quickening…I almost forgot, I have a huge pumpkin sitting on my porch that I have yet to carve up. Every time I pick up the carving knife I start daydreaming about…stuff. So I force myself to put the knife down.

I hope the floating hand by the candy bowl doesn’t freak you out too much.

First, let me tell you a couple cool facts about me. I spent 20 years in the Air Force and lived in many cool places around the world like Iceland, Germany and Saudi Arabia! Now I am settled down with my wife, daughter, cats and dog in small-town Iowa. To earn money, I teach psychology classes at a community college and help people with intellectual disabilities.

My debut horror novel is “Fall Leaves and the Black Dragon” I also have several short stories that cover a wide range of horrors: demonic gardens, a murder of crows, a spooky TV, a shark lover, and a pond you wouldn’t want to swim in! Click on the My Writing tab above to read more about them. Try a sample…I hope you enjoy them!

Not ready to buy one of my stories yet? That’s fine by me. How about a coupon code from Smashwords for a free copy of one. Any of my titles! You pick! How’s that for a treat? At the end of the Coffin Hop, I will randomly choose FIVE lucky people to win!! Good luck.

What do I want from you for this giveaway? No blood. No brains. Just leave a comment and tell me about your most favorite Halloween costume you ever wore. Your favorite could have been from when you were a little kid or as an adult or anytime in between. There must be at least one that stands out!

I remember when I was a kid the coolest costumes were the cheap plastic masks with a stretchy string stapled to them so they would stay on. My favorite costume as a child would have to be Spider Man. As an adult, I have to admit I loved dressing up for the evening as a woman. I used to have a collection of dresses and wigs! A little make-up here and there to get the look just right…and I always had my hairy legs prominently displayed! After the night was over, I just threw the wigs in a tote so every year the wigs became more tangled and wilder looking. I looked crazier and crazier as the years went by. I could have passed for a zombie toward the end of my dressing up as woman phase. I’m not sure what that says about me but it was fun!

One last thing, who is participating in NaNoWriMo this year? If you are, add me as a buddy and we can motivate each other to finish line! My name there is BaliTiger.

After you say hi and tell me about your Halloween memory (oh yeah please leave your email so I can notify you when you win!), there is one more thing you should do. There are tons of other blogs participating in this monstrous event so please creep back to the Coffin Hop main page and visit more great writers!

  1. Sounds like fun!

Favorite costume? Honestly, I can’t recall a favorite. I was a witch a lot, I suppose because the costume was cheap.

Looking forward to doing the coffinhop with you! G

  2. Heard about this hop from you first. Excited to be a part (and pleased to learn a little more about you personally in this post).

My favorite costume was the Angel of Death. I actually constructed a set of “skeletal” wings out of dead river reeds tied together with thin strips of bark. It was about a five foot wingspan. Somewhere there is a polaroid, but otherwise, sadly, no other evidence (and sadly, I don’t know where the polaroid is, either).

  3. Toss up.. I dressed up as Robin from Batman and Robin and Paper from Read Or Die. I’ve dressed up as Robin several times since… Hard to pick which one I like more.

  4. I was Amy Winehouse. I used a t-shirt and cut off the sleeves, then I painted fake tattoos on my arms. I wrote with a marker “Fuck Rehab” right on the front. We went to this party, and a guy came up to me around 2 am: He gave me the thumbs up. “Yeah fuck rehab!” he kept saying over and over again.

  5. I went as a berserker one year, complete with Mel Gibsonesque face paint ala Braveheart – and I made my own battle-axe, helmet, and vanguards – had a ton of feathers sticking out the sides from my Grandpa’s pheasants. The nightclub told me I had to leave the axe in the car 😦 I clearly remembering my cousin, dressed all Vampie and showing off her assets, asking why couldn’t I look more feminine? And yet…yet a LOT of men hit on me that night. They even used the line “where’s your axe?”

  6. Hi Erik; Well…I’d have to say Marie Osmond. But I didn’t go as Marie as an adult. I was just a little kid. My buddy from next door was the Fonz. There’s a picture of us in our plastic masks and it’s not really a cute picture. I can’t explain it. It’s more creepy than anything even though we must be all of like 5 years old. My mom has that somewhere. Now that this memory has come back I’ll have to ask her about it…. 🙂

    Happy Halloween, Erik!

  7. I was lucky enough to have a mother who was skilled with a sewing machine, so I always had a steady stream of unique costumes – Glinda the good witch, a green m&m, and the tin man, to name a few. But my favorite was my Cleopatra costume. It was a long, white gown, with purple fabric swirls and spirals. There were those little “coin beads” sewn around the collar, as well as a variety of other sparkly things to keep my magpie-esque tendancies satisfied. Best of all, there was a headpiece which looped around my head and had one part that went up. That outcrop was ended in what looked like a snake’s head, complete with gem eyes and red-ribbon tongue. Unfortunately, no one got who I was supposed to be, so I kept having to explain it over and over. It was worth it, though.

  8. I’ll be uber predictable and say a mean witch: ultra pointy hat, a black cape with glittery lining, a huge nose and Siouxsie Sioux make-up…very effective:)

Happy blog hop and have a great Halloween!!

  9. My favorite costume was inspired by my morbid fascination of murderers! I put on an old white t-shirt, emptied out four or five small boxes of cornflakes and fastened each to my shirt, stabbed a plastic knife through each, trickled fake blood down from each, and went to a Halloween party as a ….wait for it…….wait for it…….cereal killer! LOL.

  10. I don’t think I really had a favorite. I remember dressing up as a witch more often that not, but once I hit my tweens I was suddenly “too cool” to dress up and trick or treat (what an idiot I was LOL.. FREE candy!!!!!)

Thanks for the chance to win.

  11. My favourite costume is actually from just a few years ago. I got my face professionally made-up too look like a skull, and I remember not one kid being brave enough to say trick-or-treat to me.

Very nice to visit your blog and chat outside of Twitter! Happy Halloween. fear.in.words@me.com

  12. Happy Halloween! Thanks for the awesome giveaway! My favorite costume would be a princess costume that i wore when i was about 7. lol Thanks!
